Updated: Feb 16, 2022

It doesn’t matter if you visit the dentist every six months like you should or if it has been a while, there are some people that have tremendous anxiety at the thought of a going to see a dentist. We get it! We hear it from a lot of our patients and we see it when they are in the chair.
Here are some tips for you if you experience fear and anxiety during your dental appointments.
Speak to us. Seriously! Talk to your dentist, the hygienist and support staff about your fears. We don’t dismiss them. The more we know beforehand the more comfortable we can make you during your exam.
Avoid that caffeinated beverage before your visit. Caffeine can increase your heart rate which can exacerbate your anxiety. So, no coffee, tea or caffeine of any type before your visit.
Avoid nicotine prior to your visit. Like caffeine, nicotine can increase your heart rate which exacerbates anxiety.
Discuss a hand signal with us. Sound silly? It isn’t. During your exam or cleaning, you can’t speak. While we can certainly takes cues from you physically it might be best for you to have an agreed upon hand signal that you can show us during and exam of cleaning to alert us to any unusual pain that you may be experiencing.
Music. We do play music in the office. Relaxing music. But if there is something more to your liking or you wish to wear your headphones or earbuds, just ask us.
It is our mission to provide you with the most relaxing and comfortable dental experience, hands down! So, really, nothing is too silly to mention to us.
