Don’t Neglect A Cracked or Chipped Tooth

Believe it or not, STRESS can lead to cracked or chipped teeth. The latest statistics show that instances of chipped or cracked teeth have surged during the last year and a half during the pandemic. Why?
In part, bruxism (teeth grinding). Many people grind their teeth when under the weight of stress and this last year and a half has certainly caused many people stress.
What else causes chipped or cracked teeth?
Sports injuries. Falls sports such as football, soccer, volleyball, lacrosse and the like tend to see their fair share of injuries and those include chipped or cracked teeth.
Crunching/eating hard foods such as ice (stop it!), popcorn kernels and even crunchy chips can lead to chipping and cracking.
Another nervous habit by both adults and kids in school? Chewing on a pen or absent-mindedly tapping your tooth while you think for concentration.
Many people grind their teeth when under the weight of stress.
What if you don’t physically see the chip or crack? How will you know you have one?
Most cracks or chips will present as painful chewing or severe sensitivity to hot or cold beverages. The pain might come and go but if you experience it all please have it checked out.
What should you do if you have a chipped or cracked tooth? MAKE AN APPOINTMENT!
It is best to get a chipped or cracked tooth taken care of immediately to prevent further damage and alleviate discomfort and pain. The type of crack will determine the type of repair that can be done.
Is it a Craze Line crack? These are very common in adult teeth and usually are only cosmetic in nature.
Is it a Fractured Cusp? This crack or chip usually occurs around a filling. They typically don’t cause much pain but the filling will need to be replaced.
Is it a Cracked Tooth? YIKES! This type of crack will extend all the way to the root of the tooth. In order to save the tooth your visit to the dentist is crucial. Depending on whether the tooth has cracked into the pulp or past it and below the gumline will determine either a root canal or extraction.
There is also a Split Tooth and a Vertical Root Fracture which both will require a in-depth treatment whether it be a root canal if a portion of the tooth can be saved or surgery may be required.
The type of crack will determine the type of repair that can be done.
